Project #1: Main Bathroom

Main Bathroom Image 1

After much consideration on which room will undergo renovations first, the main bathroom has won the toss.  As much as we would love to make this bathroom more spacious, more open, there really is nowhere to go with it. Space would be lost in the kitchen or the daughter’s bedroom would wind up smaller, neither of which is really an option.  Fortunately there have been great strides in space saving ideas and furniture that will truly help us make the bathroom feel more open.

After pondering what we want to do with the bathroom and how we want this room to look, the inspiration for this room has come to be the Iris Flower with it’s beautiful blues, yellows and whites.  I’m excited for this room.  Initially it was discussed that we would take the tub out completely and go with a straight shower.  On further consideration, it was decided the tub will remain not just because it would be a hassle to remove, but also it is a cast iron tub for which I have a great fondness for.

These pictures may not be that great, but you get the idea of what we’re working with.  Pink tiles, dated fixtures, over-sized counter for the space, no medicine cabinet and very little storage.  The plan here is to take everything out and start from scratch.

The wall that the toilet is facing, we will be looking to bump into the pantry space behind it to create recess shelving/cabinetry and hamper storage.  Another option we are looking at is pocketing the bathroom door and putting additional storage on the wall behind the door. A significantly more compact vanity and sink, combined with the pocketed door, would open up easy space in this location. There are thousands of ideas and loads of potential, the problem I’m having is keeping all my ideas along the same line and attempting not to deviate from them all together, halfway through.

One of the most important things to have would be the color palette or some source of inspiration, for which I just so happen to have both. The Source:

Now that we are working off of this palette, we have already made our first purchases.  The Little ‘Vator found a faucet that was not only unique but really caught our eye.  Luckily we found it in the desired finish; brushed nickel, and placed the order.  It’s a “pump handle” look that will bring a sweetness and flair appropriate to the bathroom since the house is for the most part a “farm”.

Last weekend we wound up finding the vanity we wanted on sale and also purchased the sink before they became discontinued through Ikea.  I have a feeling we are going to become very fond of this store, especially when the time comes for the Kitchen Project.

Though there are still other decisions to be made but I believe we’re coming down to the wire on all of the surrounding details on a bathroom renovation.  We know what type and color of tile we want to use and where we want to use it.  We just need to find where we can make these purchases without completely breaking the bank.

At this time, you will not be seeing progress happening since we are not currently renovating but compiling all of the items in the house in order to begin the renovations when the house is cleared out.

For now, I’m signing off.

Having had the chance in the past to completely renovate a pre-1900′s row-home in Lancaster City, Pennsylvania for our first home some 10 years ago, makes me look forward to our next home.

Door Carvings

Though unlike the previous residence that had no personal value in it than the discoveries that we made ourselves, everywhere you turn there are little small works of art hand-carved and hand-crafted.  From full on cabinet doors right down to handle pulls and drawer knobs, each one carefully crafted by my husband’s grandfather.

Not only were parts of the interior hand-made but the house in its entirety was as well.  Each brick was created from a true adobe mixture, which then was laid brick by brick by Jason’s grandparent’s, father, uncle, etc. back in the early ’60′s.  There have been extensive tales of digging out the foundation, pouring the concrete, putting in the septic system, the framing, roofing…. the list goes on and on.  Though the best part is actually seeing the pictures of his grandfather on the ladder building their house.

The Tinling Adobe

After 50 years, of standing in that spot and the last dozen of those being maintained as best as could be, there is some new breath of life swept through that lovely home.  For my husband and I have been entrusted with making this home our own.  I plan on blogging as much as I can about each of our projects, ideas, layouts, color schemes, etc.  I have many half-cocked hair brained ideas that I am hoping to find ways of implementing into the house.  And with technology being far more advanced than in the ’60′s, I am certain that we will be able to make this home efficient, functional and truly amazing.  But really… how can you make something even more amazing if it already is?  We are going to try.

So, here is to what we lovingly call, “The Tinling Adobe”.  Good luck to us and may the renovating gods be on our side.

Truly~
